In plain language

The Dyslexia Awards is a UK-based awards programme. We are committed to handling personal information transparently and only when needed. This page explains what we collect, why, and how to get in touch.

Who is the data controller

The data controller for The Dyslexia Awards is Elizabeth Wilkinson MBE — The Dyslexic Dyslexia Consultant — Dyslexia Awards, based in Telford, United Kingdom.

If you have any questions about your personal data, or wish to exercise any of your data rights, please contact the Data Controller at DataController@Dyslexia-Awards.org.uk.

What we collect, and when

When you submit a nomination

The nomination form is hosted by Microsoft Forms. When you submit a nomination we receive: the nominee’s name and category; your name and email so we can confirm receipt and contact you about the outcome; supporting information you choose to share about why the nominee deserves recognition.

When you browse the site

We do not set any cookies on your first visit. The site stores your reading-aid preferences (chosen typeface, text size, line spacing, colour scheme, motion preference) in your browser’s local storage so they persist between visits — this information never leaves your device and is not visible to us.

When you use the BrowseAloud / ReachDeck reading toolbar

BrowseAloud is provided by EverWay. When you activate the toolbar EverWay may set cookies for session continuity and aggregate usage statistics. For details, see EverWay’s ReachDeck cookies and privacy information.

Lawful basis for processing

  • Awards administration (legitimate interest): we process nominee and nominator data to operate the awards programme.
  • Contacting you about your nomination (legitimate interest): we use your email to confirm we received your nomination and to tell you the outcome.
  • Marketing communications: we do not send unsolicited marketing emails.

Who we share with

The judging panel sees nominations during the judging window (29 July – 16 August 2026) for the purpose of selecting finalists. We do not share your personal data with sponsors, third parties for marketing, or anyone outside the judging panel and the awards administration team.

How long we keep data

Nomination records are retained for two awards cycles (approximately two years) so we can honour past winners and prepare retrospectives. After this period, personal data is deleted; the public record of winners’ names and the achievements we celebrated remains.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct inaccuracies
  • Ask us to delete your data
  • Restrict or object to our processing
  • Receive a portable copy of your data

To exercise any of these rights, contact the Data Controller at DataController@Dyslexia-Awards.org.uk. We respond within one calendar month.

Complaints

If you’re unhappy with how we handle your personal data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/concerns.
