Our commitment to accessibility
The Dyslexia Awards is for everyone. We’ve designed this site to be usable for people who experience dyslexia and other reading-related differences first-hand — that’s the whole audience we exist for.
How accessible this site is
This site has been built and audited to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. Independent automated testing using axe-core 4.11 found zero accessibility violations across every page in every reading-aid colour scheme.
Reading aids built in
Every page has a Colours tab on the left-hand edge of the screen (a floating button at the bottom-right on phones). Open it to change the page background to whichever colour scheme you find calmest to read on:
- Background colour — eight schemes: Charcoal, Dark Grey, Paper (the default), Soft Blue, Pale Yellow, Pale Green, Lavender and Peach. Each one has been independently checked for WCAG 2.1 AA colour contrast.
Your choice is saved in your browser and persists across visits.
Typeface, text size and spacing
The site’s built-in default typeface is Atkinson Hyperlegible — the Braille Institute’s free typeface, designed specifically for readers with low vision and reading-related differences. When the licensed Dyslexie Font plugin is active, it provides a full set of typography controls — including the Dyslexie typeface, text size, letter spacing and line height — in one consolidated panel.
Motion
If your device or browser is set to “reduce motion”, the site automatically turns off non-essential animation.
Text-to-speech, translation and reading mask
The BrowseAloud / ReachDeck toolbar at the top of every page reads content aloud in over 40 languages, translates pages, magnifies text, and offers a reading mask.
Keyboard support
Every interactive part of the site can be operated with a keyboard. Press Tab to move forward, Shift+Tab to move backward, Enter or Space to activate, and Escape to close any open panel.
Known limitations
We are not aware of any features that fall short of WCAG 2.1 AA. The nomination form itself is hosted by Microsoft Forms; Microsoft publishes its own Accessibility Conformance Report for that service.
Reporting accessibility problems
If you find something that doesn’t work for you — anything — please tell us. We treat accessibility issues as priority work.
A contact form is being added — until then, please contact us through The Dyslexia Awards directly.
Enforcement procedure
This statement is published in line with the UK Equality Act 2010. If you are not satisfied with how we respond to your complaint, you can contact:
- The Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) for accessibility concerns
- The Information Commissioner’s Office for any data-related concerns
